Vienna, Austria

Route: In and around Vienna...

Transportation: Austrian Airlines has an amazing network, so does Vienna airport in general. Austrian Airlines also has a great service called, Vienna city check-in, which allows you to check your luggage and get your boarding pass 24 hours in advance, for all Star Allaince airlines. It is very ideal if you are in Vienna over a long weekend. City check-in is also conveniently located by the City Airport Train (CAT) exit.

For airport transfer, you can either take advantage of connecting buses or take the fast City Airport Train (CAT). For other airport transfers, see Cityhook.com's Vienna page.

Accommmodations: As being a metropolitan, Vienna has many options for every kind of budget. For this quick trip, we preferred a family-run pension in city center within in modest budgetry limits:

  • Vienna: Hotel & Pension ARPI: This pension is right behind the city hall, in walking distance to the city center. It's clean and safe, but don't expect more than a wardrobe, twin bed barely for two people, and a tiny bathroom, but, hey, who cares when Vienna has so much to offer.

Food: Two things you will hear about Vienna, when it comes to food: Schnitzel and Sacher torte.

  • For Schnitzel, head a little out of ways from the city center to get reasonably priced options. For the extravagent, you can also try Serbian Schnitzel, stuffed with bacon and other goodies. Our recommendation would be Zu den 2 Lieserln.
  • Sacher torte is the famous dessert from Sacher Hotel. It is an unpretentious chocolate cake with glazed apricot.

Let's also add the following to the list based on our experience:

  • Kartoffel rösti: This yummy street snack will give you the necessary kick when you feel tired from sightseeing. They are available in many street carts.
  • Pasteries: For a good variety at conveniently located pastry shops, try Aida, with all of its pink presence.

For more: See Lonely Planet's Vienna section and Austria's official tourism website, it's got to be Austria.

A yummy weekend in Vienna, with schnitzel and pastries that turns into a tasting match!
