Crete, Greece

Route: Ryan Air has flights into Crete, from different locations in Europe. You'd probably arrive to Chania. Heraklion is a bigger airport, but low cost destinations mostly fly to Chania. Based in Heraklion, we did daily trips to the South, West and East with a rental car. Along the coast, we visited Rethymnon and Chania to the West and Ag. Nikolaos to the East.

Transportation: Car rental is highly recommended. It is one of the few ways to get around the island.

Accommmodations: Hotel Olympic in Heraklion is an affordable and comfortable option, right in the city center.

Food: Food in Crete is phenomenal. The produce, meat and the herbs are all fresh. Biopetrino in Asimi, as featured in the video, has food that will leave you dreaming.

For more: See Lonely Planet's Crete section.

Asım, a second generation Cretan Turk, returns back to Crete to visit his parents' homes, catch up with friends and make new ones.
